How to Fix Issues with Multi-Monitor Setups on a Windows PC

Dual-monitor screens are extremely helpful for those who use multiple tabs or various applications while working. It cuts the irritating task of juggling between websites without having to minimize them again and again. Not just work, using multiple-monitors also provides a hyper experience to gamers. But sadly, sometimes, it could be difficult to establish a connection between two monitors. So, to make sure that your work or leisure hours are not compromised because of this, we have put together a few ways to get rid of the problems related to the dual-monitor connection. Read to learn how.

No Signal

In case your secondary screen is getting a “no signal” message, that means the data from the primary screen is unable to make it to the secondary screen. Luckily, there are a lot of ways to fix this issue.  Sometimes the secondary screen cannot recognize the first one; however, turning off the primary monitor and then turning it on again might allow the system to acknowledge.

Checking the cables for a stable and tight connection is always a good idea. If a single of them is loose or has fallen out, you are bound not to receive the signal. In case all the wires are fitted well, then try unplugging and plugging them all back again. This time make sure all the wires have been attached properly and keep an eye on any worn-out cable that might need replacement. Another technique is to use the Windows detect tool. It will allow you to check if Windows hasn’t identified the attached monitor. Here is how to use this tool:

  1. Start by right-clicking on the empty area of the desktop screen and select Display settings.
  2. Then scroll down to find and click on the Multiple display option.
  3. Now, select the Detect button.
  4. In case your secondary screen allows multiple input options, don’t forget to select your input type beforehand.

Wrong Resolution

In case your secondary screen has a higher resolution compared to the first one, it will try to match the resolution settings on your primary monitor. In such a case, you need to fix the resolution for the secondary monitor. Here is how to do that:

  1. Start by right-clicking on the empty area of the desktop screen and select Display settings.
  2. In the window that appears, select the monitor screen whose settings need to be edited.
  3. Under the Scale and layout section, you will find a box titled Resolution with an arrow. Click on this arrow to reveal the menu and set the correct resolution for the second monitor here.

Wrong Refresh Rate

It is always a good idea to change the refresh rate on your PC to speed up the data transfer process for the new one.

You can check your PC’s refresh rate by using TestUFO. Then, do the same for your second monitor and compare the refresh rates for both of them. If you find an unusual difference, then you might have to change the fastest rate for your new monitor. Here is how:

  1. Start by right-clicking on the empty area of the desktop screen and select Display settings.
  2. Scroll down and select the “Advanced Display” option.
  3. Select the monitor screen whose settings you want to change.
  4. Then click on the Display adapter.
  5. Go to the Monitor tab.
  6. Click on the drop-down arrow next to Monitor settings and choose the refresh rate that suits both the screens.

Games Minimizing

The most annoying issue you might face when you add a second screen is a minimized game screen. Below are some troubleshooting tips that might help you get rid of this issue:

  1. Go to the windows settings to check you are playing it in “Windowed” mode. If yes, change it to “Full Screen” mode.
  2. If you keep hitting the minimize button on your game screen, try playing in the “Borderless Window” mode.
  3. Using the Dual Monitor Tool will lock the cursor on one of the screens. Don’t forget to unlock it after finishing the game.

We hope the tips and techniques mentioned above helped you get rid of your dual-monitor woes.
